NO LONGER WANTED: DRUMMER

NTTN is no longer searching for a new drummer to play permanently in the band. The following info is preserved for historical accuracy only. The band is now the Hip Pocket jazz quintet.

We try to schedule no more than 2 drummers for any evening, so we can run through a bunch of styles and have some fun with everyone. Dinner is at 6:30pm and is available for those auditioning if it will help save time and effort. Ask prior to audition night, please, to ensure we have food for you.

NTTN's sound is fairly tight and stable right now, as you'll hear on the two most recently posted tracks: "Timeline," a Pat Metheny composition on Michael Brecker's "Time Is Of The Essence, and "Footprints," a 3/4 Wayne Shorter tune we played in 4/4 on the spur of the moment.

The Fender-Rhodes is a real one, amped through a real Fender 1960s tube Deluxe Reverb. The Hammond is an honest-to-god Hammond organ. The guitarist uses no effects, preferring to play directly through a tube amp. There's a real acoustic bass viol in use on the appropriate songs. This is not a fake jazz band. The drummer will be able to swing, not just "play a swing pattern." The drummer will be able to interact musically and think on his feet. The drummer will not just play dynamics, but anticipate the dynamics and make it plain to everyone he knew where we were going ahead of time. If you're our new drummer, you probably think that stuff is pretty obvious, so you won't need to be reminded that tempos must be stable, fills must be appropriate to the groove, and good beer doesn't come in clear bottles.

Rehearsals are in La Honda, which is on hiway 84 about seven miles west of Skyline Blvd. (hiway35). A Pearl Masters drumset is permanently set up in the rehearsal room, and includes a decent set of Zildjian and Paiste cymbals and Avedis Zildjian hihat, and a Yamaha brass piccolo snare. You can also bring your own parts or kit and leave stuff assembled in the secure rehearsal room.

Gigging is largely up to the drummer. Once you're up to speed on our existing tunes and arrangements, we can either focus on originals and working towards a recording, or we can intentionally lean towards being a working band. Over the past few years, we've been leaning strongly towards building a cohesive sound and doing stuff we're happy with, more than we've been trying to hustle wedding gigs. But most of us come from a gigging background and we kind of miss it lately.
